Kanonkop is a family winery whose name is inspired by the hillock (kopje) from which a cannon (kanon) would be fired in the 17th century to alert the locals of arriving foreign ships. Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage is a very good introduction to Pinotage, a variety that comes from Pinot Noir and Cinsault.

This Pinotage is dry. bold, elegant, and smooth with supple tannins, good complexity, and depth. The wine has a perfectly balanced, juicy, harmonious taste. The palate presents ripe fruits and berries (plum, cherry, blackberry, raspberry), licorice, cedar, hints of baking spices, and notes of coffee and roasted hazelnut, but no burnt rubber! Will actually go well with grilled sausage or steak.
